Don & Linda Harling
Don & Linda Harling
Congratulations Don & Linda Harling, our 2012 Azalea Award Winners! They will be honored and awarded at our Annual Dinner on March 22 at Blue Lake Casino.  They will also be the Grand Marshals in this years Pony Express Parade. Don and Linda's Bio.....

Linda was born and raised in Humboldt County, Don moved here 65 years ago. We both graduated from Arcata High School, then on to Humboldt State University getting our teaching degrees, and both of us taught school at Pacific Union School District in Arcata. As teachers we were always involved in activities for the youth.

We moved to McKinleyville in 1972 and soon became owners of the Beau Pre Golf Club. Our commitment and service to McKinleyville started with our involvement with schools and the chamber in the mid 70’s. Don was on the chamber board during the late 70’s and early 80’s.

In 1981 Don was elected to the Board of Directors of the McKinleyville Community Services District, and served for 20 years on the board. During that time Don served on many committees such as: Land Use and Planning; Recreation; Library; Pony Express; McKinleyville Senior Center, McKinleyville High School committees, Humboldt County Junior Golf Assoc. board.

During Don’s 20 years on the MCSD board, along with other directors, and staff many changes took place in McKinleyville. The district started with water service, then added sewer, drainage, lighting districts, recreation, open space parks, and wetland zones. The Community Center was built. Then we added the Activity Center, Library, Law Enforcement Building, Hiller Park Sports Complex, trails, etc. Having lived in McKinleyville since 1972, we have been able to be involved or support a lot of the community programs, benefits, etc.

We are proud of McKinleyville and the support of the people who call McKinleyville home. Good things can happen when your community works together to get things done. We have a daughter Leilani who is a sophomore at McKinleyville High school, therefore we are very much involved with the community still.

New Pony Express Banners

The new Pony Express Banners have arrived and line Central Avenue in McKinleyville.  It was made possible by the business owners along Central Avenue who voted for and agreed to pay for the purchase and installation of the banners.  McKinleyville Community Services District (MCSD) came up with the idea to propose new banners and coordinate the upkeep and installation.  The McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce worked with Christina Cerrato, a graphic designer to create the new Pony Express Logo and look of the banners.  The McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce wants to thank MCSD and the business owners who made this possible  We feel this really adds to our annual community event and makes Central Avenue look great.  Pony Express Days has been a tradition in McKinleyville since 1968.  This year marks the 43rd Annual Community Event.  The event is always the first weekend in June and is put on by the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce.
